east of you; north too:West Quoddy Head Light

From: Bob Degen (legerdemaine@hotmail.com) | Date: 2001-05-31 01:56:25 UTC
I believe I can claim the bragging rights to both the easternmost and
northernmost box in America in one fell swoop...

Twelve steps aft of the Elizabeth D. MacCausland memorial bench, West Quoddy
Head, Maine.

Disclaimer: (please read)

West Quoddy Head, Maine, is likely a very long drive from where you live.
This may in some cases amount to more than a day of being trapped in the car
with family members or significant others, which has been shown to be
detrimental to relationships. Is one more little stamp in your journal
really worth jeopardizing these relationships? If so, here is a partial
checklist of things you should bring:

Money. Lots of it. Maine depends on your tourist dollars.

A gamut of clothing, particularly something warm. West Quoddy in particular
gets about 60 days of fog annually.

Bug spray. Lots of it (better: buy it here.)

A map. Or just drive until you are boxed in by Canada and the Atlantic.

Remember to have fun and be safe!

Additional Disclaimer:

This stamp has a wood backer which may have splinters and rough edges.
Please wear gloves and eye protection while handling it. Gloves are also
recommended when reaching into potential hiding places. Although Maine has
no venomous serpents, the rodents here can be quite voracious... as can the
mosquitoes.

For those intrepid enough to make the journey... the box contains a bonus!
Unpublished links to a small motherload of boxes in the Acadia National Park
region.

Doesn't Pete's Dragon live in Passamaquoddy?

There may be some letterboxes in Alaska, IIRC.

Now what would be cool is placing a box way out in the Aleutian
Islands, which could bring up that Alaska as easternmost state
controversy, not to mention the actual challenge. Imagine the
encyclopedia-sized disclaimer you would have to write for that box :-)

LMAO....now that's funny!

It's hard to believe that it's been 20 years since I've been to
Quoddy Head. I took some great B&W pictures that day. The fog
coming in made a perfect effect. I've spent most of the 90's going
up to Orland to help the HOME community build housing for the poor.
I never had a chance to get back to Quoddy. If I make it up there
this summer, I might take an excursion. Have you been to Machias?
Does Helen's Restaurant still have great Strawberry-Rhubarb pie and
fish chowder?

You forgot to mention the black flies. :)

There were a series of them when I was there 2 years ago. I found one and
searched a long time for the second in the series to no avail. It was a
little unnerving hunting letterboxes up there. Lots of wild critters about.
Passed several moose on my way there. I kept thinking about what could be
hunting ME as I was hunting letterboxes. Sheesh... and mosquitos the size
of Winnebagos that followed me around the whole time I was in the woods!

Just returned from Alaska yesterday. As tour director I told everyone on
the coach about Letterboxing as we passed Russian Lakes trail on the way to
Seward. They really seemed interested in the hobby--we're all from Iowa and
little is known of it here. Nancy
